HIS 7790 iCooler Turbo 1GB GDDR5 Video Card Review

Videocards/VGA Reviews by stefan @ 2013-05-20

The new HIS 7790 iCooler Turbo card is well balanced and recommended to people on a tighter budget who will want to upgrade their old GPU in order to be able to play the latest games on monitors up to 24’’. The cooling system is simpler compared to the offerings from XFX or PowerColor and an overclocking utility is supplied on the HIS website for added value.

Conclusive Thoughts

The latest 7790 iCooler Turbo 1GB from HIS is the third card with the same GPU we are reviewing and as the offerings from the other manufacturers, it comes pre-overclocked from the factory. The cooling system is different, simpler compared to the other cards, featuring an orb-like heatsink with a copper plate and the fan is placed in the middle. To avoid overheating in the VRM area, the manufacturer has covered it with an aluminum plate with fins. While the maximum temperatures we have obtained are a little higher than the 2-fan cooling solutions, they remain optimal, allowing us to squeeze even more performance from the card by overclocking.

Speaking of overclocking, by using the tool supplied by HIS, we were able to raise the memory to higher limits than CCC, at about 1690MHz. After finding out the maximum stable memory frequency, we have also started raising the GPU Clock little by little and have achieved a maximum of 1170MHz (remember, this without upping the VDDC at all).

The HIS 7790 offering is a good mainstream card and can deliver acceptable framerates until 1920x1080; in some cases, to be able to achieve playable status for the most stressful games, we will have to dial down the settings a bit and maybe eliminate extra filters like AA.

The HIS 7790 iCooler Turbo card can be found online for about 123 Euros, a good price we think for what it’s offered.

is there a 2GB version of the 7790? with multi monitor setup's having only 1GB can be a bottleneck
Comment from Stefan Mileschin @ 2013/05/21
As far as I can see, there is no 2GB version, but anyway, I wouldn't bother gaming in a multi-monitor setup with a single 7790 since the results would be quite choppy. For a single 24'' monitor with medium and sometimes high settings it could work fine (considering that you also have a powerful CPU in order to gain a tiny amount of frames too and to avoid any limitations).
