Hitachi Touro Desk Pro 4TB USB 3.0 External HDD Review

Storage/HDD by stefan @ 2012-12-10

The refreshed Touro Desk Pro from Hitachi comes with a new high capacity 4TB drive, which succeeds to deliver better transfer speeds than the previous, 3TB model. The temperatures of the drives are close to the ones we have seen with the Touro Desk Pro 3TB and the enclosure has the same design lines.

Conclusive Thoughts

The new Touro Desk Pro from Hitachi comes with the high capacity HDS724040ALE640 (Deskstar 7K4000) drive, preserving the same plastic chassis along with vibration dampening rubber, which covers all 4 fixing screws. The noise in seek is noticeably lower than the 3TB variant, but the heat generated seems about the same. If we use the drive for a longer time without letting it rest, the temperatures can climb up to 53-54 degrees Celsius (ambient 21 degrees Celsius), mostly because the enclosure does not feature a small cooling fan like WD My Book series. Because of this, we would recommend placing the Touro in a very well ventilated place to avoid overheating.

The enclosure also features a Kensington lock port but does not have an On/Off button to stop the product completely when we do not need it.

The plastic enclosure is not serviceable and if we try to open it we’ll discover that some plastic claws on the sides will get broken and it cannot be put back as it was from factory; also, after opening it we will also lose the manufacturers’ warranty.

The performance of the 4TB drive is excellent and succeeds to beat all other drives tested in the past; this means that the data transfer time will be kept to a minimum.

The Touro Desk Pro 4TB can be found in online shops for about 226 Euros, while the 3TB variant stands at 185 Euros.
