Intel Sandy Bridge-E i7-3820 CPU Review

CPU by leeghoofd @ 2012-03-01

Who said all good things come in 3 fold ? Today we introduce Intel's youngest offering in the SnB-e lineup. The i7-3820 is not a hexacore like it's two bigger brothers ; the 3930K and 3960X. But a Quadcore version for the socket 2011 platform. This allows Intel to launch it at a far more affordable price then the two previous mentioned socket 2011 models. Thus making the i7-3820 maybe a perfect replacement CPU for the socket 1366 Bloomfield CPU's. But the competition is fierce, not from AMD, but within Intel's own lineup. What has this i7-3820 more to offer then eg a similar priced 2600K SnB ? After a brief introduction about this i7-3820 we are continuing straight to the results to spot any noteworthy performance differences.

Game Benchmarks

Can the new i7-3820 still stay in front of the 2600K during some games ? Starting off with the gangster shooter Mafia II. Performance is on par between most CPU's listed.

Resident Evil 5 loves all the extra CPU/RAM power you can throw at it. This zombie slasher is pure S2011 domain.

Streetfighter IV, a mortal combat look alike, keeps on pumping insane FPS numbers. Again just out edging the 2600K CPU, but not by much.

Close call with Lost Planet II, a DirectX11 game. The 2500K/2600K snatch the win here, but it's so darn close between the Sandy family.

Driving around Monte Carlo track in your favourite F1 car is barely faster on any of the listed Intel CPU. Still very playable on the AMD lineup, but they are missing some raw power compared to the Intel CPU's.
