Xigmatek Elysium Full Tower Case Review

Cases & PSU/Cases by leeghoofd @ 2011-10-30

Full tower cases are usually needed by end users that needs tons of storage capacity. Or by watercooling fanatics that need adequate space to house all of their huge radiators. Sometimes you don't have any option besides to go for a full tower case, as your motherboard's size is out of proportions. A few of those particular motherboards might be Intel's Skulltrail, eVGAs SR2/3 motherboards or even Gigabyte's X58 UD9. Due to their XXXL ATX size, only full towers need to apply for the job.

Todays Elysium is Xigmateks high end full tower chassis, ready to take on any big size motherboard you throw at it. Fully ready to be fitted with your favourite watercooling gear. Looking at the specifications, most options are well covered. Loads of storage space and ventilation are straight warranted out of the box. Time to open that freaking huge box and have a look at this full tower offering.

Conclusion

I can only compare this full tower case with my good old trusty Lian Li big tower case. The Elysiums storage capacity is huge. My god who's ever gonna fill up them 12 5.25" drive bays ? The included two  "4 in 3" HDD cages are a joy to work with. Yes you still need 4 screws to secure your Hard Drive. But their mount is impeccably damped by the rubber grommets. On top of that, the bay fan keeps all of your beloved data storage at cool operating temperatures. The front panel sports a good dust filter. And is is easily removable, in case you need to give the dust filter a good rince.

Talking about the cooling performance. The included cooling is more than adequate. But has a lot of headroom for improvement. Even fitting extra humongous 200mm fans are a no brainer for this case. For exact amounts and types I refer back to the specifications sheet. For those that want a solid case that can house a beefy watercooling setup, this case is heartly recommended. Fitting a 360 rad on top is easy peasy as the space foreseen is huge.

Huge is a word that is being repeated time after time in this review. This case is so spacious that fitting the biggest badd ass motherboard is only a matter of minutes. No tight fits, no where do I leave this cable now so it won't be in the way situations. This case got you covered as even the nerdiest PC builder can achieve a clean build. The numerous cutouts can handle any PSU cable you throw at them. Since this is a full tower chassis it is no surprise that up to two power supplies can be installed.

I really like the design of the case. Lian Lis are mostly very classic and with no frills. This case with it's ABS plastic parts give it that little extra to make it a bit more attractive. The case can be bought with a windowed sidepanel and with a black or silver theme.

After all the postiveness , it's time for some small to improve points. The USB3.0 front panel support via routing cables through the rear is not a real issue. But it could have been executed in a more classy way. Either by using an adapter that could route the cables in a more straight way, instead of routing via one of the precut watercooling holes. The length of the USB 3.0 cables is also not long enough to attach them to my USB3.0 ports. Or include an adapter to hook it up straight to the motherboard. Since this a premium quality case the latter should be included. Also the LED on the fans are a nice gimmick for those that love them. Imagine if you have this case in your bedroom or living room, an on/off button would have been nice. Due to the numerous fan possibilities, a little fan controller would have been a nice option too. Not that the included fans are loud, far from. But when you add more fans it would be a nice gadget to have some sort of RPM control out of the box.

To wrap it up : The Xigmatek Elysium big tower case is well designed. The provided cooling good is sufficient. If not even good enough by your personal desire of airflow, this case can be upgraded with more fans then you can ever wish for. The two removable Hard Drive bays can stack up to 8 Hard Drives. The top Hot Swappable docking station is a real plus for those that need to quickly shift data without opening the case or using aftermarket external HardDrive devices. The overal build quality is good, only the paint job on the sidepanels seems a bit fragile. All in all a very well executed big tower chassis that can be yours for around 150 euros. Maybe not the cheapest, but far from the most expensive. And you get a serious big tower case for that money !
