Today we take a look at a retail solution from Scythe to silence your hard drive. It should be considered as a last resort after you have swapped other noise makers from your system like the VGA/CPU fan/heatsink, and the power supply.  The “Silent Box”, as Scythe has aptly named it, is basically a large rubber box the size of a CD/DVD drive. The internals are filled up with foam pads cut to make place for a 3.5” hard drive. Let’s check out the specifications. Specifications Model Name: SBX-1000 Compatibility: 3.5" IDE HDD up to10,000 rpm (no 15.000RPM SCSI drives) Dimension: 144 x 211 x 41 mm Material: NBR (Nitrile Butadiene) & SBR (Styrene Butadiene) Rubber Case & Aluminum Cover Weight: 840gram Connector: Ready for Serial & Parallel ATA Cooling: Powered by Heatlane Technology The Silent Box promises to keep your drive cool, even 10.000rpm ones, to achieve this Scythe has used their tried and tested Heatlane Technology.   In the box  The Silent Box comes with custom screws for fixing to the unit to the case; there are also gel pads which need to be placed between the Heatlane and the hard drive to improve the heat transfer. Extra power connectors are included also for SATA and PATA drives, this makes installation inside the case easier. The manual is plain and simple with clear pictures and instruction, almost perfect, notice that I said, *almost*.
